Relieve tightness around your breast implant

Capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue capsule your body forms around a breast implant becomes unusually thick, tight, or firm. As the capsule contracts, your breast may feel firmer, become more painful, or develop changes in shape, position, or symmetry.

Capsulectomy is a surgical procedure used to address problematic capsule tissue. Dr. Kamal Addagatla removes part or all of the scar tissue surrounding your breast implant, depending on your circumstances. The procedure may be combined with implant removal, replacement, or modification of the implant pocket to improve comfort, breast contour, and implant position.

Signs and symptoms of capsular contracture:

  • Increasing firmness or hardness around your breast implant
  • A breast that feels tight or unusually rigid
  • Pain, tenderness, or discomfort in the affected breast
  • Changes in breast shape, contour, or symmetry
  • Visible distortion or displacement of the implant
  • An implant that appears higher, rounder, or less natural than before
  • Reduced implant mobility within the breast pocket
  • Progressive changes that may affect one or both breasts

Dr. Addagatla’s approach to capsulectomy

Your treatment plan begins with a careful assessment of the implant, surrounding capsule, breast tissue, and your goals for revision surgery. Often through an incision placed in the breast fold or near an existing breast surgery scar, Dr. Addagatla accesses the implant pocket and carefully separates the abnormal scar capsule from the surrounding tissues. Depending on its thickness, location, and severity, he may remove part of the capsule or perform a total capsulectomy.

Once the capsule is addressed, Dr. Addagatla evaluates the implant pocket and remaining breast tissue. Your existing implant may then be removed permanently or replaced with a new implant, depending on your treatment plan. When appropriate, he may also modify the pocket, change implant position, or use additional techniques such as fat grafting to improve breast contour and symmetry. The tissues are carefully reshaped and the incisions are closed in layers to support healing and a refined contour.

Advantages of capsulectomy:

  • Removes tightened or thickened scar tissue surrounding a breast implant
  • May relieve pain, pressure, firmness, and tightness caused by capsular contracture
  • Helps restore a softer, more natural breast feel
  • Can improve breast shape, contour, and symmetry
  • Creates an opportunity to remove or replace an existing implant
  • Allows Dr. Addagatla to evaluate and revise the implant pocket when necessary
  • Can address implant distortion or displacement associated with contracture
  • Customized based on the condition of your capsule, implant, and breast tissue

FAQs

No. A total capsulectomy is not necessary or appropriate for every patient. Depending on the location and severity of the capsule, the condition of the implant and surrounding tissues, and your goals, Dr. Addagatla may recommend releasing the capsule, removing only part of it, or performing a total capsulectomy. The surgical plan is individualized after examination and discussion of the benefits and limitations of each option.
